Grandson of Canadian homesteaders, Richard grew up on a mixed farm in a rustic, multicultural community in central Saskatchewan, Canada. After moving to Portland, Oregon (1959), experiencing God’s call and recovering from culture stress, he completed college (electronics engineering), married Ruth and reared three daughters. In 1967, his church selected him to serve on its foreign field committee and alongside its pastors. For the next 21 years, Richard worked with the committee to launch or serve initiatives to seven nations. In 1970, Richard was ordained as an associate, bi-vocational pastor; in 1980, he was ordained as a senior, bi-vocational pastor. Since 1988, Richard studied intensely and has continued to serve bi-vocationally, completing his M.A. (intercultural studies), studies towards a M.Div., and a D.Miss. For the D.Miss., he, with his wife, Ruth, helped launch holistic initiatives to several Central Asian peoples. In 1998, his agency asked him to direct its community transformation, mentoring and training functions. These roles opened unique doors: to develop relationships with community visionaries; and to enlarge his understanding and application of the servant mindset, bi-vocational service and community transformation concepts. By 2001, Richard’s prior life had prepared him to lead the launch of Community Vision International (CVIČ), a virtual mission for the 21st century. Today, Richard is a husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. Still sometimes working as a consulting engineer, Richard focuses on leading CVIČ, serving CVIČ associates, and coaching visionaries. As a coach, Richard helps Christians to discover their personal design, to launch initiatives consistent with their design, and to transform communities through their initiatives, all to advance God's good kingdom.
