Resourcing families in Ecuador Kent and Gulnara first met in 1984 when Kent was serving as a short term volunteer in Quito, Ecuador. Kent was studying youth work at the time, and Gulni was studying industrial design. Ten years later, after five years of letter writing, they were married. Kent was then working as the art director for Azusa Pacific University Communications Office in California and Gulni had been overseeing a national youth program in Ecuador. Two years later, they worked with youth in Mexico developing youth-oriented resources. Their search for greener pastures and cleaner air led them to Gresham, Oregon. While there, Kent worked as the graphic designer, and Gulni worked part time as a medical translator and as full-time mother to two boys, Andre and Jessiel. The Leanders came to the United States with the intent of returning overseas within 5 years. They have now returned to Ecuador where they direct community programs to strengthed families and children in the northern city of Ibarra and surrounding communities. They also assist Compassion International with the local community projects. |
