Empowering the poor and disadvantaged Born in Java, Indonesia, to a then influential family, Boone was active in the resistance movement against colonial rule, establishing grassroots schools while learning radio technology. He later earned a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, worked professionally for several years, and is an expert in appropriate technology. Compassion for the poor eventually led Boone to a change of carreer. He and his wife, Barbara, have served or launched several social betterment initiatives in different countries, serving the homeless, the jobless and the disadvantaged. These include Compassion For the Hungry, Mercy Corps, HEART Institute, Coalition for Urban Ministry, Hand to the Plow, and others. Currently Boone trains disadvantaged communities in their development efforts, as well as the more advantaged who seek to effect community transformation. Boone Sumantri
